Sagebrush Showdown

What is the Sagebrush Showdown?

The Sagebrush Showdown is an all female nogi grappling team tournament!

Who is competing?

All teenage & adult ladies are welcomed to compete. They will be personally invited or you can request to participate by contacting us here. There is no cost for competitors!

When and where does it take place?

It will occur at Altruist Mixed Martial Arts on Saturday August 30th at 11:00am.

What are the teams?

Competitors will range from both Teenage and Adult female students. Every female will be given a ranking and placed into teams based on their skill and weight, as judged by Kumu Eric. Teams will be announced one month before the Sagebrush Showdown.

How does the competition work?

  • All competitors are guaranteed at least (2) matches.

  • Two teams are randomly pitted against each other in this first “Opening Round.”

  • The first match will have every competitor grapple against a woman of their equal ranking.

  • There will be points for each win based on submissions and overtime (there are no referee’s decisions or draws).

  • Whichever team has the higher point value in the Opening Round earns the right to decide the first half match ups in the “Team Round!”

    • e.g. There are (4) teams of (4) competitors.

    • The top two teams in the Opening Round get to decide who are the 1st and 2nd opposing grapplers are in the Team Round.

    • The 3rd and 4th grapplers are decided on by the disadvantaged team.

  • In the Team Round, two teams are seeded against a each other based off the results of the Opening Round.

    • When a competitors wins their match by submission, they receive (3) Team Points and moves on to face the next opponent.

    • If a competitor wins by overtime, they receive (1) Team Point but BOTH competitors are removed from the round - allowing the next two competitors to grapple.

  • The winning team moves onto the “Championship Round” while the two losing teams face off first in the “Bronze Round.”

How long are the matches?

Matches are (5) minutes long. Overtime is (2) minutes.

What does Overtime consist of?

A competitor is assigned heads or tails and a coin is flipped. The winner gets to decide one of two scenarios:

  1. Mount escape

  2. Guard pass (starting in seated open guard)

Then the loser of the coin toss gets to decide if they want to go first or second, e.g.

  • Coin toss winner chooses guard pass.

  • Coin toss loser decides to pass guard first.

  • Coin toss loser passes guard in 45 seconds.

  • Coin toss winner passes guard in 30 seconds.

  • Coin toss winner earns 1 Team Point and both competitors are removed from the round.

Overtime is capped at 2 minutes. In the event of another tie, then the other tie breaking event is performed e.g. tie for guard pass, so now they must both perform fastest mount escape.

Other Rules

  • If a 20lb weight difference, heavier opponent starts in half guard knee shield.

  • All submissions are legal.

  • Referee reserves the right to tap should a competitor not be defending a submission safely e.g. fully extended armbar, not hand fighting or heel slipping a fully locked in heel hook, getting their face cranked and not defending appropriately, etc.

FAQ

What if I beat everyone on their team? My teammates don’t have to grapple?

That is possible if you win all by submissions in regulation. This is the reason for the Opening Round. That way ALL competitors are guaranteed to grapple vs someone of their same ranking and then whatever happens in the Team / Championship / Bronze Rounds. More likely than not, competitors will grapple more than 2x though :)

Can I stand up if I am the heavier competitor starting on the bottom with knee shield?

Yes, but this bottom position was applied to mitigate any injury due to weight difference as much as possible. It is the lighter competitor’s responsibility to to hold you down should they choose.

What do we win?

Trophies to the winners, medals for the runners up, cost free - good natured competition experience for all (with as many safety precautions as possible)!
